Research Findings

We first researched the cost of generating a business lead online back in 1999 and again in 2005 to determine how much does it really cost to develop a business lead online that resulted or showed a PROFIT.
  • $7.85 cost per lead that resulted in a profit.

    Both tests used paid advertising (pay-per-click) in major search engines with a budget of $1,000 for each test. We limited the amount paid for each click to $0.25 (25 cents). At the end of each test the leads generated which signed up to our newsletter were tracked for one year to determine the profits generated from each of the leads.

    Out of the $1,000 ad budget we produced 127 leads that generated a return (made a purchase) for a low priced affiliate item that we were promoting.

    The total amount of sales made was $2,413 and the commission we were paid was 35% of the sale amount for a grand total of $844 in commissions earned (our return on a $1,000 ad budget).

    As you can see we had a NET LOSS of $156 plus countless hours of post and manage the ads.

    Both test results averaged a net loss of about 15 percent of our ad budget. In other words, we lost 15% of the total amount of whatever we spent on advertising.

    Could It Be The Product?

    One of the questions we had after the test results was the price of the affiliate item and the commission paid. If the price of the item was higher, the commission would also be higher. We tested that therory and duplicated the same campaign but with a higher priced item that offered us more commission. IT WASN'T LONG before we realize the losses were going to be even greater.

    What Did We Learn?

    No matter what product or service you are advertising, it requires a long-term strategy of cultivating the leads you generate over a period of time. The more opportunities you have to sell your leads, the greater the opportunity for profit. This is why it is so important to have your own mailing list to keep the communication going with your leads (prospects).
Can You Lower The Cost Per Lead?

Our next research test was directed at developing local leads to the same web site and the same offer. We did NOT use the Internet to advertise. All of the advertising was done off line and with the same ad budget of $1,000.
  • $3.82 cost per lead that resulted in a profit.

    Our first test was so successful we have continued using the strategy to this day.

    I use word-of-mouth advertising and the advertising is in the form of business cards that are designed as FREE MEMBERSHIP cards that I pass out to friends and leave at places I visit - and I mean everywhere I go, I leave the membership cards.

    Out of the $1,000 ad budget we produced 262 leads that generated a return (made a purchase) for the same priced affiliate item that we were promoting in our first two research tests.

    The total amount of sales made was $4,978 and the commission we were paid was 35% of the sale amount for a grand total of $1,742 in commissions earned (our return on a $1,000 ad budget).

    As you can see we had a NET GAIN of $742 plus the time I spent passing out the membership cards was nothing since I was already there doing something else.

    What is surprizing is this strategy continues to produce profits after many years (because I have access to these members) and the cost per lead continues to drops as they continue to purchase items from time to time.
